Microprocessor Defined

The microprocessor, commonly referred to as the CPU, is responsible for performing operations based on the instructions of programs. In general, the microprocessor performs three functions: data manipulation, logical comparisons, and mathematical calculations. The microprocessor is closely related to the overall speed and performance of a PC.

"Our processor can perform only a few very simple quantum tasks, which have been demonstrated before with single nuclei, atoms and photons," said Robert Schoelkopf, the William A Norton Professor of Applied Physics and Physics at Yale. "But this is the first time they've been possible in an all-electronic device that looks and feels much more like a regular microprocessor," he added.
